Ep 136: Lessons of Performance by the First Ever Female NFL Coach - Dr Jen Welter
Breaking Ground in Sport through Mental Application and Desire.
It’s fair to say that our guest this week has created a few firsts. Dr Jen Welter is the first female coach to ever to coach in the American NFL with the Arizona Cardinals. Jen was also the first female to play running back in a professional football game in the American League.
With a master's degree in sport psychology and a PhD in psychology Dr Jen has put the learnings from her studies to good practise during an amazing career in the NFL as both a coach and player. In this show we delve into the psychology of performance, creating winning team mentalities, delivering in the face of naysayers and the stepping stones to developing GRIT and resilience.
Here’s what we talk to Jen about in this episode:

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”

Here’s what we talk to Jen about in this episode:
- How does Jen describe what she does day to day?
- Was this career a dream and if so how far back can Jen remember having this idea or dream?
- How does Jen describe her coaching style?
- Having a master's degree in Sport psychology and a PhD in psychology, what tools did that equip Jen with, to break into a male dominated world and successfully carry out the gig?
- What part does curiosity play in peak performance?
- How did Jen go about opening up the guys they were coaching?
- GRIT is a theme of our show, where does it come from?
- What are the lessons of resilience you have taken from your own path that could be passed onto another young girl with dreams?
- Dealing with the voice of doubt?
- The Washington Post said "The biggest question coming in was would guys in the NFL respond to a woman coaching them, and the obvious answer is yes” What was the moment where they came on board?
- "Playing against the guys taught me a lot about them and a lot about myself”. What did it teach Jen about herself?
- What was the greatest fear in taking the role of a coach with the Cardinals?
- The Cardinals were founded in 1898, and are the oldest continuously run professional football team in the US, given their history and Jen made history there, did that ever play on the mind or perhaps motivate Jen?
- It’s a well publicised part of any NFL coaches strategic plan is research, I know this is a big part of Jen’s own personal strategy, what’s her approach to learning and thinking about different possibilities for the players?
