EP 113: WHAT FACING CANCER TAUGHT A NZ HIGH SCHOOL CAPTAIN DURING HIS GRADUATION - JAKE BAILEY

Keeping the Promises we Make to Ourselves to Live our Life to the Fullest.

Jake Bailey's story went viral last year when at the age of just 18 he left his hospital bed in a wheelchair to deliver a rousing valedictory speech at his graduation as school captain of Christchurch Boys' High School, just one week after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. During that speech, he told his fellow students, "Here's the thing, none of us get out of life alive, so be gallant, be great, be gracious and be grateful for the opportunities you have."

Above all, Jake Bailey has a powerful message to share. It's a message that will MAKE YOU THINK about your life, your priorities, how you cope with life's challenges, what you're grateful for and especially who you love.

Here’s what we discuss in this weeks show with Jake:
  • Jake Bailey's amazing backstory as he faced cancer as a teenager.
  • How bad was the Cancer in Jake’s body?
  • What’s it like to go through Cancer?
  • How do we manage to keep the promises we make to ourselves to live life to the fullest?
  • How something Jake’s Grandmother said to him helped him get through his treatment.
  • Jake talks about journalling.
  • Has the cancer had an effect on his emotional ongoing state?
  • When facing Cancer, where could we draw strength?
  • Has Cancer changed his view on leadership and his leadership style?
  • When Jake feels overwhelmed, what does he do?
  • The most important lesson one can take away from the Cancer experience.
  • Does Jake visualise what Cancer is in his body?
  • What’s the first thing that goes through Jake’s mind when he wakes up in the morning?
  • What do people do NOT know about Cancer?
  • Does Cancer carry a stigma that you cant laugh at Cancer or approach it with a fun attitude?
  • Learning to sit with emotion during treatment, and how it helped train Jake to be better at reflection.
  • What’s the message Jake wants to leave school children with?
