EP 129 : from welfare to stanford - a truly inspiring story of grit and resilience - coDy coleman

The Most Incredible Journey of Struggle, Grit and Success

This is just an amazing story of inspiration, perseverance and facing up to hardship. Born in New Jersey, Cody Coleman had a Mum declared insane by the FBI and then jailed for threatening to kill a senators son. He never knew his father. Today he studies at one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

This show tracks the journey and how Cody went from the poorest family in his district with no parents to guide him, to now studying computer science at Stanford. Such an inspiring, incredible, honest and real story of grit and persistence.

Here’s the journey we cover with Cody:

  • Cody had a rough upbringing, going back to his childhood.
  • His family were poor, but just how poor was Cody and his family?
  • Making the decision to not follow the path of darkness, but instead pursue learning.
  • Cody’s older brother was the guy who really impacted his belief system and guided his new path.
  • Flicking the switch from "Why bother to Why Not?”
  • How a maths teacher called Chantel Smith impacted Cody's life?
  • Reflections of a story of grit and determination.
  • Cody’s great motivation, where does it come from?
  • GRIT is defined as "Constancy of effort over time” - What has kept Cody going?
  • Working at Google, what did he learn from his time there?
  • Now that Cody is at Stanford, what’s the next dream for Cody in Computer Science?
  • In the quiet moments, when Cody looks back through his past, what emotions does it stir? Does he have any resentments, or regrets?
  • With all that Cody been through - Who or what lessons have had the biggest impact on his life?
  • The feeling Cody had as a boy to wake up on Christmas morning and find a present under the tree with your name on it?
  • Niave Optimism, we explain what it is and why it had that become so powerful for Cody?

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”
