The Mojo Radio Show EP 151: Navy SEAL Talks Winning on the Business Battlefield - Chris Fussell

Navy SEAL, Chris Fussell, on leadership and winning in business

Chris Fussell, a former U.S. Navy SEAL Officer, spent 15 years leading SEAL teams in combat zones around the globe. He served as Aide-de-Camp to Lieutenant General Stanley McChrystal, becoming an integral part of a team that transformed special operations forces into successful, agile networks. Chris is a Partner at McChrystal Group and leads the McChrystal Group Leadership Institute. Combining his learnings from the military and experience in business, Chris helps leaders develop strategic intent and remove barriers to executing a strategy.

Here's what we discuss with Chris in this week's show:
  • When someone asks you what you do, how do you like to reply?
  • In an age where we are very self-focussed, SEAL teams have to stay focused on the guy to their left and the guy to their right. How can leaders create a similar culture in business?
  • How do leaders scale trust?
  • What is an aligned narrative? What is a high-level narrative?
  • SEAL teams established a steady cadence of operations that aligned with the objective of defeating a fast-moving enemy, Al Qaeda in Iraq. How do you combat a fast-moving competitor?
  • While the SEAL teams were efficient, they weren't effective. How did they change their operations?
  • How do you maintain accountability in a decentralized command?
  • Strategy always comes with its share of friction. How do you view friction?
  • Rational fear requires irrational thinking
  • Compartmentalism as a leadership tool
  • What we don't know about the SEALS?
  • Which areas do you still have to work hard at to be disciplined?
  • Lessons from SEAL teams we can pass on to our kids
  • The Cocktail Philosophy, a lesson Chris learned from his wife

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”
