EP 154: How Crisis and Failure Can Serve as a Catalyst for Personal Growth - Petrea King
An extraordinary tale of how crisis, failure and disappointment can act as a catalyst for growth and strength
Petrea King has an extraordinary life story which she's recounted in her new book, Up Until Now. She's been a guest on our show three times and with good reason - she's simply amazing. Petra has overcome cancer, endless months of hospitalisation for misaligned legs, a divorce, childhood trauma, the suicide of her brother and the challenges that come with building a business, and yet she knows no boundaries and has taken each challenge head-on. After spending time in complete silence in an Italian monastery, Petrea began to find her purpose and calling in life. Motivated by her own experiences, Petrea founded the Quest for Life Foundation and has counselled tens of thousands of people living with illness, grief, loss, trauma and tragedy. Petrea sees the challenges in life as a catalyst for personal growth and understanding, as well as an opportunity for healing and peace. This beautiful and inspiring episode details how she overcame her challenges to dedicate her life to others.

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”

Here's what we discuss in this week's show:
- How did Petrea feel to put the story down in writing finally?
- Is there a kind of therapy in writing our own story?
- While it’s great to have a story, we don't have to be that story. What does that mean?
- Did Petrea discover anything about herself in writing this book?
- Do we have our values out of whack?
- Leaning into hardships when they confront us
- Psychoneuroimmunology's impact on Petrea’s recovery after years of pain, surgeries and hospitalisation
- How bringing one's attention to a simple task can make it into a sacred one
- Have we made the process of mindfulness too complicated?
- The process of bringing ourselves to this moment.
- Is there a way to make suffering bearable to ourselves or others?
- What does it mean to stand in the way of peace?
- Petrea's struggles in social situations
- Swami Kriyananda said, "There is no solid ground, and the only way to have peace and good humour is to respond to each moment to what is and not your version of how things should be.” Is perception a struggle for many of us? The failure to see how it is?
- What is the physicality of grief?
- The meaning of the German saying, "the last shirt has no pockets."
- What Petrea carries with her that gives her strength each day?
- The invisible world vs the visible world
- Petrea says, “I failed at having a good life." What is a good life for Petrea today?
- What can we learn from death?
