Nick Enfield is Professor of Linguistics at the University of Sydney and author of "How We Talk." In the book, Nick explains the real inner workings and science of a conversation based on his research on language, culture, cognition and social life. Often we take our words, dialogue and communication for granted and in this show we dig into the fascinating topic of how we can draw the best out of ourselves and others in the discussions we have in and out of work.

Here's what we discuss in this week's show:
- When people ask Nick what he does, how does he like to reply?
- What does a linguist actually do?
- What important changes have we seen with language in the last 5 years?
- What impact is social media having on the way we communicate?
- By listening to the tone, grammar, and content of another’s speech, we can predict when they’ll be done. Are we predicting too much and not actually listening?
- Is a gap in the conversation before we respond acknowledged as a good thing?
- Are we less tolerant of silence in a conversation with the pace of life today?
- Markers like “um” and “uh,” is it Nick's belief that they can be valuable?
- People can use “um” as a way to claim more conversational space for themselves.
- Is conversation suffering because we don't look at each other?
- People will use "Ahh ha", or “mm-hmm” a lot while the other person is talking, is that a good thing to signal that we still listening, and in some cases do we use it to make people think we are listening, but actually we are distracted doing something else?
- Research has suggested that when the listener is distracted, then the storyteller tends to circle back and repeat themselves.
- A good interviewer has to suppress a strong tendency to jump into a space of silence. Is this a skill we should develop for deep meaningful communication with others?
- Huh? is a word and is universal around the world, should we be encouraging or discouraging our children from using Huh?
