EP 188: Learn To Release Yourself From The Outcome & Perform At Your Best - Tom Foxley

The self-talk that is best for your personal performance

As a kid, Tom Foxley was diagnosed with a heart condition that doctors said could kill him. That news turned Tom into a weak, timid 14-year-old. This lasted until at age 17 a college professor read an extract from a book. The extract flipped how Tom viewed the world and himself. He learned to embrace intensity and discomfort. Tom changed his life by mastering his mindset. He joined an elite branch of the British Military before setting up Inner Athlete Performance Camps and Mindset RX'd Seminars where he trains elite athletes.

Here's what we discuss in this week's show:
  • When people ask Tom what he does, how does he like to reply?
  • Why is training a metaphor for life?
  • Intensity Tolerance: how hard can you push before you quit?  How do we get beyond that quitting point?
  • The Inner Athlete is the gap that lies between your current level and achieving your potential as a human being. What is the gap?
  • Are we caught up in a rat race of competition to such a degree that anything short of perfection is a failure to us?
  • 3 important words Progress. Over. Perfection.
  • Does the psychology of 10 reps hold us back?
  • I am working out vs. I am an athlete, does the way we frame ourselves impact the results we can get?
  • What is the amplification of success?
  • Tom left the British Military, why leave, why not implement all the things he trains and tough it out?
  • What does it mean to be vulnerable in your training?
  • How to learn the type of self-talk that is best for your performance
  • Why performance and health are not the same? “Performance is about pushing boundaries. Health is about staying within them.”
  • Become the athlete you have dreamed of. Are we losing the ability to dream of a healthy us?
  • Tom has struggled with negative feedback - how has he been able to come to grips with that?
  • Is the distraction of the phone always checking messages or socials affecting the efficiency and efficacy of the workout?

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”
― Hunter S. Thompson, The Proud Highway: Saga of a Desperate Southern Gentleman, 1955-1967
